When you think of the web you generally don’t think of the great outdoors but believe it or not some gardeners consider it their best kept secret! Here are a few ways you can use your Hughesnet to make your green thumb greener
Ordering Supplies: You can buy some supplies at your local hardware store but what about the hard to find stuff like organic fertilizer and those specially-fitted gloves you like? The world wide web is a gardener’s paradise.
Ask Questions: If you’re wondering why your orchids won’t bloom or what kind of sunlight dahlia’s like you may want to find a gardener’s chat space where you can talk about your efforts with other gardeners. You’ll get your questions answered and you may strike up a friendship with someone who has similar interests!
Get Some New Challenges: Wouldn’t it be cool to really challenge yourself? Order some rare seeds or seedlings online and see if you can get them to grow in your climate or greenhouse – the rest of the world has never been easier to get plants from!

Gardening can be a fun and rewarding hobby. A garden needs good soil to plant seeds or flowers, but the main thing a garden needs is water to help it grow. When you know the right watering techniques, you can produce a better garden. Gardens take time to grow, but in the end you are rewarded with beautiful flowers or fresh produce.

Beginner gardeners need to know and understand the best way to water their gardens if they want them to survive. There are some tips or techniques that work good for the beginners. First you can read all the labels or tags that are attached to your plant before placing it in the ground. The tag will advise you on how much water the plant will need and what kind of sunlight it will need to survive. By following the advice on the plant, you will know exactly how much water is needed. If you just water a plant without knowing the proper amounts that are needed, the plant can be over watered.

Another good tip is to plant all of the plants that require a certain amount of water in groups or areas together. That makes watering them much easier. Some plants will require less water than others, and you would not want to plant them close to the ones that require lots of watering.

Watering your garden is one of the most important factors in ensuring a good growth. During the first week after planting the garden, you will need to pay special attention to the amounts of water. Your garden should be watered on a regular basis to enable the plants to grow strong roots in the ground. After the plants having taken root, they will not need as much water to continue growing and producing.

A pond is always a nice feature to have in your garden. Keeping one in good condition, however, is not always easy. Here are some tips.

Plant good oxygenators such as iris and fairy moss, but be ready to prune back any overgrowth. Dead or dying plants should be removed, and plant containers should be topped with gravel to prevent fish from disturbing the soil. Get specific advice on plant choices for the size, depth and location of your pond.

Stock the pond with fish. The most popular, and often the best, pond fish is the common goldfish. Not all fish are winter hardy and if you live further north, consider removing fish to an aquarium for the winter. Koi are best kept only in the larger ponds.

The biggest problem ponds have is algae. If you have a fountain, then a filter can be attached to it. This turns your water feature into a filtration system. Make sure to remove dead leaves in the fall and in winter, float a plastic ball in the pond to prevent it from freezing completely. All of these steps will remove algae and help keep the oxygen levels up for your fish.

If a pond is leaking, you may have to drain it to replace or patch the liner, so always be prepared to remove fish and water plants so the pond can be drained. Fish should not be kept in small bowls for any longer than is necessary.

Keeping your pond well stocked and in good condition will make it a fine asset to your garden.

Deserts are home to a diverse selection of arid plants. While some plants grow naturally in the desert, others have adapted over many years. However, there are some specific garden flora that do extremely well in desert climates.

Cactus and other succulent plants are naturally hardy desert plants that require very little care. Once they are established, most will survive on their own by receiving their moisture strictly from rainfall. A few of these varieties would include the Barrel Cactus, Kingcup Cactus and Pricklypear Cactus.

All kinds of wildflowers can be found growing in the desert regions. Is this new to you? Catch up here Desert flower gardens attract birds, butterflies and insects, plus they add an abundance of color to a desert landscaping. Some of the wildflowers that flourish well in desert gardens are the Mexican Gold Poppy, Arizona Poppy, Dune Evening Primrose, Desert Sand Verbena, Desert Lily and most types of Marigolds.

Drought tolerant trees provide shade, shelter and even food for numerous kinds of animals that are native to the hot deserts. They are ideal for planting near desert gardens to attract birds and to shade smaller plants from the sweltering hot afternoon sun. The best varieties of desert trees would include the palms, Texas ebony, Palo verde, Cascalote, mesquite, Guajillo acacia, Mulga acacia, Joshua and ironwood trees.

When to Prune the Orchard in Southern Climates

Because of the propensity of most southern climes to remain warm all year and rarely frost, fruit trees can be grown nearly year-round. This is especially true of citrus trees, which are sub-tropical evergreens. For citrus trees being grown in Southern California, the usual method is to prune them between winter and spring. Usually between December and March, which are the cooler times of year. Citrus trees do not actually require much pruning, but a general thinning of dead or insect-infested branches and water sprouts is usually prudent. This helps explain it more.

For other types of fruit trees, pruning between December and February is ideal in southern climates. This is when the tree is in its slowest period of growth and has usually stopped producing fruit. Apple, pear, apricot, dwarf apricot, sweet cherry, peach, nectarine and plum trees all require annual winter pruning. Japanese plum trees especially require heavy pruning, as do peach and nectarine trees. Some of the other trees have long-lived fruit spurs that do not require much pruning. Simply thinning out dense areas to improve sunlight penetration and cutting back laterals is all these trees need. Do not trim shoots under 3 inches however.

In the northern part of the United States, pruning apple trees is done at a time of year when most pruning is long since past. The best time to cut back an apple tree in the colder regions is during the dormant growth period of winter. Long after the apple trees have been filled with harvest the branches are ripe for cutting back. This is the prime time for a good cut back of broken branches, trimming the shape of the tree and cutting away any offshoots that have grown vertically like a pointer or a drum stick. These offshoots serve no purpose but to drain needed energy away from healthy growing branches.

When pruned in the winter months during dormancy, an apple tree can start its re-growth fresh in the spring. Pruning of an apple tree is well known to produce a healthier more robust harvest overall. A second smaller pruning can be done in summer to cut off any sprouts which show signs that they will not bear fruit. These sprouts will take away from the overall harvest if not cut back. Many apple tree owners and orchard owners miss this little pruning but it can significantly impact a harvest as any unnecessary growth takes away from the healthy fruit during its growth process.
